Bio-feedback therapy

Can someone explain to me what it is?
My mom starts treatments of bio-feedback therapy today for depression and/or anxiety.
What are the side effects? Can this harm her in anyway?

Sorry I missed this Lissa. Biofeedback is a technique that measures bodily functions such as blood pressure, breathing, heart rate, muscle tension, and skin temp in order to help control certain reaction. By watching these measurements, you can learn how to alter these functions by relaxing or holding pleasant images in your mind.

Electrodes measure your heart rate, blood pressure, or other function. A monitor displays the results for both you and the trained practitioner to see. While the practitioner describes stressful situations and guides you through relaxation techniques, you can see how your heart rate and blood pressure change in response to being stressed or relaxed.

Biofeedback teaches you how to control and change these bodily functions. By doing so, you feel more relaxed and may be able to help treat such conditions like headache, chronic pain, anxiety, etc..

So how long do the results last? She has had about 6 treatments so far and seems to be doing a lot better.... will it 'wear-off' anytime? Will she have to get these treatments forever in order to function?
Her anxiety and depression was SO bad, she was cutting her wrists, taking pills, etc.
And are there any side effects?

No, it doesn't wear off because it is a new learned response. For a few months she will need to continue to consiously practice what she has learned, for instance, when she feels anxiety coming on, she will need to cosiously stop what she is doing and practice the technics she has learned, but after a few months it becomes habit, and she most likely won't even think about her response anymore, it will be automatic. The wonderful thing about bio feedback is no side effects, addiction, or any of the nastyness that can come with pills, it is just her and herself learning to respond to certain stimulie differntly. Another thing you may want to read up on is DBT (dialectical behavioral therapy) I have personaly gone through it, and I am neither BPD or Bipolar, though that is the people the course was originaly designed for, it is now known to be effective for many disorders including anxiety, which is why I took it, and it complimented my bio feedback very well. http://bipolar.about.com/od/dbt/Dialectical_Behavi oral_Therapy.htm
