Concerned about cardiac symptoms and side effects of nuclear rest/stress test

I recently had a nuclear rest/stress test done after staying in the EACU of a hospital overnight. Stress test was done because sometimes I am tachy, sometimes hypertensive, and sometimes both. And, I sometimes have chest pains. Results of rest/stress test were negative (no abnormal rythyms or blockages), as were head CT & chest x-ray. I'm 37 with no diagnosed history of heart disease.

I take buproprion and eat a low carb diet, which has me losing weight. The current theory is that all of the cardiac symptoms are due to anxiety, potentially made worse by the buproprion and the adrenaline being released due to the diet. The current plan is to add an anxiolytic and reduce the buproprion dose. I will also follow up with my internist and review the findings.

I concerned about the rest/stress test. I am concerned about perhaps being unnecessarily exposed to the isotope they used. I did some research before my test, and questioned whether or not they were going to be using thallium. They told me they would be using Cardiolite (and were quite surprised that I even asked, but seemed relieved when they figured out I googled it).

After the test I asked one MD who told me they did in fact use thallium, but now the hospital denies it and says they used Cardiolite. If they did use thallium for both portions of the test I received almost the annual limit of radiation for a human. I also have very loose stool now, which I've had before but stopped when I went on my low carb

It really leaves me questioning if they used this method it doesn't sound like they were even worried about what they did use or they were very interested in if you could find out what they did use i would research this further cause it sounds like they might have used something they weren't suppose to

There are three isotopes they could have used. The one that is most commonly used now is in short supply for various reasons. Thallium is approved for both cardiac rest and stress tests, and I believe is cheaper, but it's radiation burden is four times that of Cardiolite (hence the name). Nuclear medicine being what it is it has to be highly controlled, and is doubtful (yet not impossible) for falsification of reports and records. However, it is quite likely that clinicians would be less than truthful with the patient if they felt it was in the patient's interests (i.e. to make the patient feel better).

Bottom line - using thallium for both a cardiac rest/stress test put a patient at 80% of "safe" radiation exposure in a single year, and 40% of "safe" exposure over any five year period. There is nothing I can do about having been exposed at this point - any damage is done. However, I do deserve to know what I was exposed to, if nothing else but to guide decisions on potential future tests.

And, it's not just that I "deserve" to have a copy of the medical records, it's actually the law.

Thank you for your answer, softbabe44. If there is anything in my "clarification" (as this site calls it) that would help shed more light on the overall picture, please let me know...
