Do I have Schizophrenia?

I am a fifteen year old girl and I am scared that I have Schizophrenia. When I am tired, about to go to sleep, or, occasionally, when I am sick (leading to be being tired), I get some really random thoughts. I'll be thinking about school the next day and all of a sudden think something random like "pizza!" or something like that. It doesn't stop me from thinking the original thought and sometimes I don't even notice it. I almost feel like I have the front, thinking part of my brain which thinks normally and the background noise part which is constantly humming. Nobody is telling me what to do and I very clearly know it is all in my head and it ONLY HAPPENS when I am tired. I did have one incidence in sixth grade when I couldn't say what I meant and felt lightheaded. I was sent home from school, threw up, and felt completely normal again. That hasn't happened again. I also have Generalized Anxiety Disorder and have had it since I was a young child (probably 4 or 5). My family has a history of anxiety but no history of Schizophrenia. I also have ADD and obsessive thinking (as part of the anxiety). Please tell me what you think.

Your worry about having a different dissorder is most likely just your known disorders doing their thing.

perhaps mentioning your concerns to your health care professionals will ease your mind when they explain why you do not have schizophrenia.

It sounds as if you have a very active mind that is constantly jumping from one thought to another. When you are in a high state of anxiety that will happen because your mind keeps running through lots of different thoughts. If it is causing you a problem then physical exercise can help - anything from walking to doing a more formal type of exercise as you have something physical to think about so your mind can get a bit of a rest.

Getting some help with the anxiety would probably help so you could get some books on the subject or see a professional who uses cognitive behaviour therapy or hypnosis or something similar.

Although anxiety can run in families it's a learned behaviour which means that you can also learn to change it.

At your age, rest is the best medicine for you. You sound normal to me but make sure you get plenty of exercise and rest, and eat nutritous food. It is important for you to believe in yourself, know that you control your own thoughts. Never do drugs or alcohol because this will distort any negative thoughts you have about yourself. Don't be afraid to face your fears, and learn to speak up for yourself. Good luck.
