Question

Asked 2/5/2010

I want to know about benign essential tremor.

I already submitted this, but when I got back on to see if there was an answer, I was provided a user name and password, but I don't know where to use them... anyway, I'll write it all again as best as I can remember it.
My husband has correctly diagnosed himself with this illness. For years doctors have been taking us down the anxiety/depression path. He certainly does have those conditions as well -- are they a part of the syndrome? Or are people just depressed because they shake? He's on 10 mg of propanalol every 4-6 hours as needed, but he doesn't take it much because it makes him sleepy. As it is, he sleeps poorly at night, wakes up shaking and naps 3-4 times a day. He has no stamina and no life. As he often says, he's "unsteady on his feet" and has fallen several times. He can't drive and can't walk the dogs. His appetite is poor. Do all these symptoms come under the heading of essential tremor? The psychotropic drugs he's tried all make him too dopey to function at all. They include Paxil and Effexor and a few others I can't think of right now. They all do the same thing.
I think he would be a good candidate for the awake-surgery where they probe the brain in the right spot to stop the tremor. My sister told me she saw it on the Today Show this week. Mt. Sinai hospital.
I hope I get an answer this time. Thanks.
