Question

Is it ALWAYS better to hire an attorney if you are filing a SSI/disability claim?

If you have a lot of proof........that you weren't even aware of...........since 65% of disability claims are denied, is it in my best interest to contract with an attorney? I have received the contract and the paperwork from an attorney, but have not signed yet. I know they take 25% of back payment if they win the case.......and I sure could use it. I do have an appointment at Social Security in two weeks. My psychiatrist fully supports me on this and I have been treated for 17 years now. I've lost countless jobs because of my depression, anxiety, social phobia, OCD, probable bi-polar and possibly ADHD........ I have not worked in 15 months now. I am about to lose my home that I have been buying on my own for 10 years now, and my son, whom I have custody of (and receive child support for) has been treated since he was 3 years old for ADHD and 3 weeks ago added to his list was Depression, and Severe Anxiety disorder. Thank you in advance........

Your sons condition will have no impact on your claim. Plus, if they decide his conditions because they mirror yours are caused by you or problems associated with his current home life, they could remove him from your care as a matter of his best interest.

As for needingan attorney - I would much rather have an attorney who knows the system than try to represnt myself... its only the smart thing to do.
