Is it okay to leave my 6 year old beagle in his crate while I am away from work?

I am able to play with it for an hour & able to walk it When I get home, he is allowed to go around the condo. .I only got him from the pound and am still trying to see his temperament? Would it be all right to leave him free at home since he is old? Can beagle owners give me some advice. I love my dog and would not like to give it up? He seems to be crying in the cage when I leave the house and I am the one having the separation anxiety.

I am happy to hear that you adopted a dog from the pound! Thank you for saving his life, that's a wonderful thing.

Some dogs do well in crates, while others are scared to be in there. Some dogs who come from the pound remember being caged up and find crates terrifying. You should experiment with different things to see if your dog might be calmer left out of the crate. Anything over 5-6 hours is too long to be in the crate anyway, as your dog will need to go to the bathroom.

If you are worried that the dog might damage or destroy something in your home, you can confine him without necessarily using the crate. For example, you could put your dog in the kitchen, or the bathroom, someplace where you have a hard floor that won't get ruined like carpet if the dog has an accident. Then use a baby gate or something similar to block the doorway and keep him in there. Our dog goes in the kitchen, with a puppy pee pad in one corner, and her bed, food, and water on the other side of the room, and that has worked well for us.

Every dog is different so you'll have to experiment and see what works best for him and your home (and you). Good luck!

I would not reccomend the crate for the time you are gone i would reccomend a small play pin, this will allow the dog room to play around while you are gone...if he is crying when put in his crate its cuz he knows he is going to be there a while. try playing with him before you leave and assure him that you will be back...give him a toy or two to play with. Beagles are known to need attention but i dont see what the problem would be if you get him a pin rather then crate...put yourself in the dogs paws...watching your best friend walk out the door and not knowing if they are going to come back would frighten you too especially when closed in a small area...give him some room to relax in and who knows give him chance to be free around the condo...close off the areas you dont want him in and try it for a day...you never know he might surprise you...as long as he has enough toys and such to occupy him he should be fine. And if you play with him before you leave he may get tired enough to sleep throughout the day. since you just got him...a couple days in a crate wont kill him but i would not recommend doing this long it can be tramatic for a dog so be careful....i hope this helps and thanks for saving this dog...God Bless!

Your dog has likely experienced an owner who used the crate as punishment in the past and he has developed negative associations with it. When done properly, crate training is a wonderful way to keep your dog confined while you are away. Since most adult dogs spend the majority of their day sleeping anyway, it is not cruel to leave your dog in his crate while you are away. Some steps to take:

1. Make sure the dog's crate is an appropriate size. The dog should be able to stand up and turn around in his crate. The crate should not, however, be so large that your dog can toilet in one corner and still be able to lie down elsewhere in the crate. My 43 pound dog has a 31" (diagonal) by 25" (height) crate and she is very comfortable.

2. NEVER use the crate as punishment. Do NOT use it as a time-out spot, as a cool-down area when the dog is getting to rowdy, or when the dog has done something you don't like.

3. Work on building a positive association with the crate. My dog knows that EVERY time she is asked to go to her crate, she gets a treat. She loves her crate, and frequently chooses to spend time in it even when we are at home.

4. Do some desensitization training. Go through the motions of leaving the house. Stay outside for a minute or two, then come back in and let your dog out of his crate. Repeat many, many times over the period of a week (100 times in one week is not too many). Your dog should begin to realize that confinement is temporary, and that you WILL be coming back home to take care of him.

Hope these tips help!
