The state of Georgia can't determine if your son qualifies for SSI. It is a federal program. They can only decide that he isn't entitled to state benefits. Unless your son lives on his own, he should still be considered a dependent and continue to receive state benefits through you, especially if he is learning disabled/bipolar.

To apply for SSI your son must contact the social security adminstration. He will be asked to provide proof of identity, proof of address and documentation to support his claim. They will mail him a list of the things they require. Your local social security office should be willing to assist your son with the paperwork. It can be intimidating.

Following the application for SSI, your son will receive a notice that his claim has either been approved or denied. The application and appeal process can be lengthy so don't expect an overnight response. If SSI has been denied, and most are initially, he can request a hearing. He will be allowed to take a support person with him to that hearing, whether it's you, a school counselor or a friend. The judge will listen to him (your son) and make a final determination.

If all the paperwork is just too overwhelming for you and your son, you (he) can retain the services of a lawyer. Many specialize in social security and offer free evaluation. The social security admininstration strictly regulates the percentage of back payments a lawyer is permitted to receive and a retainer cannot be required. Read the fee agreement drawn up by the attorney carefully before signing it.

Thank you. my mother gets aid for my children , she was told as long as he stays in school she can continue to get aid for him and she provided the proper proof required and her worker still cut him off thats why he went to apply for GA to at least get some medical coverage but all he was allowed was foodstamps and was told he had to drop out to receive cash aid and they didnt approve his medical. also thank you for the info

You are welcome and thanks for the award. I can't imagine why the state would rather have another high school dropout than help with medical coverage. That's ridiculous on their part. Apply for that social security and good luck.
