Question

Asked 6/17/2010

My dog is agitated, quivers and cannot seems to sit down comfortably, he has liver troubles.

My dog is a 10.5 chiauhua/corgie/terrier cross and has always been very active and healthy. This past year he has had troubles with his anal glands so I get them cleaned every 6 weeks. Last week he was very lethargic (unusual for him) so I took him to the vet. His liver was at 1083 (average is 10-150) We had a urine sample done & ultra sound - no signs or symptoms of Cushings or tumors. Last night he started shuffeling around (not wanting to sit for long - looking as though he can't get comfortable) This morning he is doing the same thing, his tail is in between in legs and he's quivering (holding his body tense but shivers) He seems very agitated and uncomfortable. His anal glands were just cleaned a week ago but he looks very uncomfortable - I feel so bad for this little guy. Any advice? thanks so much for your time! He is on liver medication and anti-anxiety as he has so much separation anxiety so I thought the stress may be affecting his liver as well. We feed him really good food and he gets at least an hour of off leash excercise a day. For 10.5 he looks really young - I feel so bad for my sweet dog!

He is a cutie! It would be best to take your dog to the vet. The tail held between the legs is an indication that he is not feeling well and the shivering can be a sign of pain that he is experiencing. If he is hesitating to sit down, it can be for a variety of reasons, but it is also possible that the anal glands are infected and one may could even be ruptured. Your vet should be contacted to determine what is wrong with him. I hope he feels better soon.--PetCaretaker

Its is possible that his anal gland can be irritated. if he needs his anal glands done every 6 weeks then he needs him done but i would suggest every 3 months-- every 6 weeks is a little much and it is soft tissue in there. it can get irritated or even infected. dogs place their tail between their legs for various reasons but in this case it could be because she is feeling discomfort in her rectal area. I have a 4lb yorkie and I can just imagine what you are feeling as my little dog is my sweet little baby! I even rock her to sleep at night and hand feed her. I also have 2 great danes and my male had problems with his anal glands as well. I had taken him to have his done by a new groomer when i moved across town. I dont know if she was inexperianced or he moved the wrong way or what happened but a few days later he too had his tail between his legs and whining a lot not able to sit on his behind. during the anal excreetion she must have tore the soft tissue casuing a small infection. He was placed on IV antibiotics and home the next day, after a few days he was back to his old self again. At that point i started driving across town to the previous groomer who had been doing it before. I also started waiting longer between having his anal glands done. instead of every 3 months i would go every 5 or 6 months, this has always been enough time for him as he has never displayed any discomfort inbetween anal gland excreetion visits. If your dog can wait 3 months inbetween anal gland excreetion visits i would try that. if she shows discomfort inbetween say at 8 weeks, have them done every 8 weeks. if you have already tried this and she must go every 6 weeks.... its better than seeing her in discomfort. hopefully tho, she can wait longer inbetween visits giving that soft tissue more time to become less irritated.
I really hope your baby starts feeling better soon. kiss her nose for me! :)

THANK YOU Pet Care Taker for your Answer! I phoned my vet after I left the first email and also took Zorro out for a walk! When he's out and about he 'appears' to be as happy as a lark! Although I had his anal glands cleaned and did almost $800 worth of testing last week (ughhh!) I think I will take him in ... it seems to me it's his anal glands again! Poor guy. I love him so much!

Thank you gotta get it! I think you're onto something! I don't take him in until he starts to show signs (i.e. scooting etc) I don't think they would be blocked now as he did just have them cleaned a week ago ... but you could be right on about the infection. I'll get him checked out today! Thank You! Nose Kisses done for you! <3

DoggyZo., Just keep an eye on him for a while and see if it gets progressively worse. Sometimes you can see some visible swelling from the exterior if an infection is developing. He may just be having a little soreness from having them expressed. After an 800.00 vet bill, I understand you hesitation to rush back over there.(We have a lot of pets and the vet expenses can get a bit excessive). But if he has continuing discomfort, it would be best to have him checked out. Keep us updated and let us know how the little man is doing.--PCT

Just wanted to let you know that I took Zorro to the vet again about an hour after we spoke via this website. The vet said he is fine. He assumes that maybe it's just a nervous habit and just to keep an eye on him. He checked his anal glands and they looked okay as well.
I"m going to continue with his meds - ontop of that he get's great loving care, good food and lots of exercise. He will get more blood work in 4 weeks to see if his liver count has gone down. Fingers crossed that all is good!
Thanks for your help, info and concern! Much appreciated!

I'm glad to hear that nothing was detected. I would keep a close eye on him if the behavior was out of the ordinary. I'm sure you will take excellent care of him. Best wishes.-PCT

Get him healthy, and cut down the dose of his anti-anxiety pills. He may also have a food allergy,so try to get him on a more natural diet

Thanks Mark - I just started the anti-anxiety as he howls for about 2 hours whenever we leave him and cannot be left in the car for even 5 minutes if I run into a store. I thought the 'stress' related to separation anxiety may of been part of the reason his liver was so bad. He's on really good food and gets at least one hour of off leash excercise a day (we live in a great city with lots of trails and parks for dogs :-)

I don't want him to be medicated for long and am going to check for food for the liver tomorrow - He's eats food for dogs with allergy sensitivities already.

I think he got into something in the woods one day when I was walking and perhaps got into the cats litterbox and that's why his liver was so off. Regarding the quivers and such ... I assumed it was his anal glands but I don't know.

I appreciate your thoughtfulness and advice - thank you! I'm going to monitor him and get him tested again in the next 3-4 weeks to see where his blood etc is at.

Much appreciated - thanks!
