Over the Counter Anxiety Medicine

My boyfriend had emergency brain surgery this week. I have been super stressed and I just can't seem to calm down at all. It's really started to affect me and I have to find a way to relax soon. Do you have any recommendations of over the counter medicines or herbal rememdies to help reduce the effects of stress and anxiety? Please give me some options with a brief description as to what to expect. Any help would be much appreciated.

Dear secretfacade

There are no effective anxiety medications available over the counter. But you can take anti histamine drug to induce sleep. Phenergon 25mg at the night or Benadryl syrup 10ml can be effective. But they do not cure anxiety. They will induce sleep.

Phenergon can make you really drowsy. Usually its effect lasts around 15 hours. Same with the benadryl. In addition, you should not drive vehicles/operate machinery under the influence of Phenergon or Benadryl. However, they can be helpful.

If you are looking for prescription drug then Xanax 0.25mg to 0.5mg will be effective for anxiety as well as to induce sleep. Xanax in over dose can cause problems.

Hope this helps

Unfortunately there is not an over-the-counter anxiety reliever (aside from something like Tylenol PM that helps you sleep) that will reduce anxiety. There is no herbal remedy or cure for anxiety, either. If you see one that makes claims to this, understand that herbal remedies/supplements are not regulated by the FDA or monitored by the FDA, and therefore, there is not significant proof that these work.

You can do a few things to help alleviate your anxiety.

Don't drink caffeine--it causes edginess.

Don't drink alcohol.

Try eating fruits and green, leafy vegetables.

Talk a walk. Do some stretching exercises, breathing exercises.

Look at fish. Yes, this has proven to relax people and even decrease blood pressure.

Take a time out, some time for yourself. Take a bubble bath. Take a nap. Read a book. Go to the park.

Lastly, you may want to see a doctor. Sometimes, anxiety can lead to depression, and this is even more difficult to fix.

Valerian Root will reduce anxiety and help you relax, you can get Valerian Root from any drug store. It's where the natural remedies are in the store. Valerian Root is known to calm down the stress and anxiety levels in your body. Valerian Root can be taken up to five times a day, there are 'no' known side effects. Simply take one or two, to start out, to help lower your anxiety level, and maybe a couple hours later take another one if you feel your anxiety level is increasing again. At the end of the day you may want to take the other two to help your body relax and get some restful sleep. You don't have to take them in this order, but it sounds like for the first day you may want to. As your anxiety level 'decreases' you may feel tired, because your body is relaxing, take advantage of it and take a nap, your body needs it. You may feel more relaxed after your first dose, you'll be able to tell after an hour or so that it's working. Valerian Root doesn't make you feel light headed or cloudy either, it simply relaxes your nerves. I wish you and your boyfriend the very best.

There are no over the counter anxiety medications that I've ever heard of. You will probably need to get a prescription of Ativan or Xanax fom your doctor.

In the mean time, you could try different other methods of relaxation, like meditaion, drinking camomile tea, taking a hot bath.

Stay away from things that will stimulate you even further, like caffeine.

Actually, there are several calming remedies available from well stocked grocery stores and natural food stores.
We've used rescue pastilles. They're in a yellow tin. They don't work like tylenol works on a headache, but they do help to calm the nerves enough so you can use other tools to relax.
Try taking deep calming breaths. It sounds obvious, but focusing on the intent to fill your lungs and slowly empty them really helps to relax your muscles. You can also try squeezing your fist as tight as you can and then going limp and shaking it out. These are simple awareness tools that help you to focus and deal with your feelings rather than getting overwhelmed by them.
B vitamins and magnesium are both important to take when you feel stressed out. Not a lot, just a normal dosage, but taking a supplement can help your body continue to deal with stress well.

You can also try sipping on some calming tea. Chamomile is the classic choice, but peppermint can be calming too. (and less likely to make you drowsy)

You'll need to use behavior tools in addition to herbal remedies, but maybe those will be enough to get you through this rough patch. If you do need more help, if you aren't functioning well and becoming easily overwhelmed, talk with your doctor. There may be some short term meds you can take to help.
Good luck!
