Stop smoking

I have been smoking for five years now, and really want to quit. Whenever i have enough willpower to actually try the problem comes down to anxiety. I start getting anxiety attacks whenever I'm alone and haven't smoked in a day or two. I have tried nicorette and some kind of patch, but I still get the anxiety. What should I do, or ask a doctor?

Definitely talk to your doctor. Nicotine is extremely addictive - akin to cocaine and heroin - and can cause you all sorts of problems when you try to quit. Aside from the withdrawal symptoms, the behavioral withdrawal can be just as bad and also cause anxiety, irritability, lack of focus, forgetfulness, problems sleeping...etc etc. The good news is there are medications available now that could probably help you with your anxiety. There are also medications that are specifically prescribed to help with quitting smoking - one is called Wellbutrin (buproprion) and the other Chantix (varenicline). I have been on both and can answer any questions you have about them - just post a question.

Smokers Anonymous Class, try the patch, research the cause of deaths through smoking, google, all actors who died prematurely due to smoking, remind yourself that theres is a person who is in need of that $8-9 bucks your paying on cigarettes everyday. Go to the doctor for a clean bill of health and see if what your hoping for is what the doctor tells you, I bet it will be something more dramatic. Just ask yourself is it worth it at the end.

The avenue I took was to use a prescription drug (Wellbutrin) to ease up on the anxiety and the cravings. It worked beautifully, and I recommend that path to everyone. I only used the drug for about 6 weeks (2 weeks before I quit and 4 weeks after) to help with the transition from a smoker to a person with a few more bucks in her pocket and a much healthier life!

The urge to have a cigarette only lasts about 15 minutes. Sit down and make a list of things you can do when the urge strikes you. Some suggestions are: take a walk, do the dishes, cle(an up an area of your garage or house, calla friend for support, take a warm mineral bath, fix a healthy snack (no sugar or caffeine). This will distract you until the urge goes away. I quit 3 months ago, using Chantix and a support group at my local hospital. I had tried many times before to quit on my own, but was unsuccessful. The addiction to nicotine is very strong. It isn't easy to quit, but you CAN DO IT. The Chantix had some side effects I didn't care for (tiredness, depression), but I only took it for 3-1/2 weeks. That was all I needed to help me over the hump, so to speak. The biggest factor is probably your motivation - you have to REALLY want to quit. I watched my father die of colon cancer last year and he was a heavy smoker for most of his life. It wasn't pretty. That gave me a lot of motivation!

I wish you the best of luck. Set your goal and stick with it! Check with your local hospital for a class - the support of others really helps!

I teach my stop smoking clients EFT or Chinosis because both those techniques give you something physical to do and help you to deal with anxiety. You may also find that you are drinking more caffeine or something else that is making you feel anxious. Any effects of nicotine withdrawal should be gone after about 4 days - though you may not experience any at all. I would recommend making sure that you're not going to be alone for several days when you stop next time. Or use EFT or Chinosis to help you deal with the anxiety. Make sure you eat healthily as well.

I quit smoking by using e-cigarettes. I smoked for 30 years and have tried a few times to quit with no success. I now use e-cigarettes daily instead, which satisfy my cravings by vaporizing liquid nicotine. Quitting completely would be ideal, but it just wasn't happening so I am pursuing a healthier alternative. I've found that I don't even want a real cigarette now, if I try one they taste terrible. I feel better, look better, and allergies that have plagued me for years have virtually subsided. You can get more information about e-cigarettes here http://good-ecig.info/

Quitting smoking is one of the hardest things to do successfully. There are a lot of factors associated with cigarette smoking, including: physical addiction, psychological addiction, habit, oral gratification, and social issues. After years of working with many different people fighting many different addictions, I am convinced that nicotine is the most addictive drug. I have seen people stop using alcohol, cocaine, and other drugs and still not be able to quit smoking.

Quitting cold turkey is not necessarily a good idea as nicotine is physically addictive and many people suffer severe physical withdrawal symptoms. It is much better to cut down gradually. Most people quit smoking 4-5 times before they quit for good. So, never give up, just keep trying.

There are many different therapies for stopping smoking, many of which are nicotine based. Different people are successful with different therapies. Nicotine substitution in the form of lozenges, gum, inhalations, and patches are helpful in preventing withdrawal symptoms while a person works on the other things needed to quit smoking.

Zyban is a medication that can assist people to quit smoking. Zyban is fairly well tolerated and safe. Quitting smoking still demands a great deal of will power. Zyban is a form of Wellbutrin, which is used in treatment of depression. Some people have unusual mood disorders likened to personality changes, but this is not common. Zyban is the same medicine as Wellbutrin, which is used in the treatment of depressant. People can take Wellbutrin for many years and continue smoking.

The most effective medication available for smoking cessation is Chantix (Vereniciline). Chantix blocks the pleasant effects of nicotine on the brain. People describe just not caring or wanting another cigarette. It is not well tolerated and has a variety of unusual side effects. It has helped many people stop smoking. After taking Chantix daily for a week, cessation of all cigarette smoking is recommended, and that Chantix be continued for a full 12 weeks. Most people will continue taking Chantix and deal with the side effects, and will usually completely stop smoking within the first two weeks, but do not tend to continue taking Chantix after the first month. Many people have successful quit using Chantix.

In order to work on the habit aspect of cigarette smoking:
1. Place your cigarettes where they are not handy, so that you will have to be more aware of your decision to smoke a cigarette. Some people keep their cigarettes in their glove box in their car, so that they have to go outside the house and get the cigarettes out of the car in order to smoke one.
2. Learn to recognize your triggers. Triggers are things that will prompt a person to light up a cigarette. Some examples of triggers are: drinking coffee, drinking alcohol, talking on the telephone, going out for the evening, finishing a meal, etc.
3. Develop replacement behaviors for cigarette smoking. For example, keeping your hands busy, chewing gum and/or socking on candy.

I hope this is helpful!

Meditation is the best solution for getting over anxiety. Smoking is not your nature, it is just an habit. It is just a mechanical behavior. When you stop smoking you may feel anxiety for few days but it is ok. Soon it will go even if you don't do anything about it.

If you do Mindfulness meditation for fifteen minutes everyday then you will have control over anxiety. Just close your eyes and watch your breathing for fifteen minutes. Your mind will become calm and relax. Actually many people find relaxation in smoking. Now you have to give a different alternative to your mind.

You can also breath deeply for five minutes when you feel anxiety. Your mind will instantly calm down. Breathing and mind are connected. When you breath deeply your mind instantly become calm and relax. Within a week your mind will learn to breath deeply when you feel anxiety. Breath deeply, breath from your belly and it will be impossible for your mind to feel anxiety. Just give it a try. It is easy, simple and effective.
