There are many different anxiety disorders classified in the diagnostic manuals. I will list them here (based on the American version), with a summary of the main symptoms:
- Acute distress disorder: This is where a traumatic event causes pervasive symptoms such as feeling (mentally) numb, feeling in a daze, loss of memories related to the event, general irritability, hyper-vigilance, flashbacks, etc.
- Agoraphobia without history of panic disorder: panic like symptoms in relation to agoraphobia (fear of crowds, public places, being outside).
- Anxiety disorder due to general medical condition: panic attacks, anxiety, obsessions, compulsions.
- Generalized anxiety disorder: uncontrollable excessive anxiety and worry over a long period of time.
- Obsessive compulsive disorder: obsessive thoughts and behaviours.
- Panic disorder: panic attacks (with or without agoraphobia, distinctive diagnoses).
- Post-traumatic stress disorder: traumatic event followed by pervasive flashbacks, nightmares, hopelessness, memory problems, hyper-vigilance, feeling detached from others, difficulty concentrating, etc.
- Specific phobias: fear of specific things such as heights, spiders, etc.
- Social phobia: excessive fear of social situations, avoidance.
- Substance-induced anxiety disorder: anxiety, panic attacks, obsessions, compulsions, attributable to substance intoxication or withdrawal.
