What's a good medicine for anxiety? I'm wondering about medication for anxiety, as well as your experiences with them. If you've been treated for anxiety with medicine, I'd like to know lots of details - like if it worked, how long it took, any side effects, how long you satayed on the medicine and anything else you could help with. Thanks! |

Xanax is a miracle cure for anxiety. Wihin the normal dose range, it does not make you sleepy such like Valium, nor produces headache. It can be prescribed as a generic 'Alprazolam.' My primary care physician admits he prescribes it to all of his patients who suffer from anxiety. My husband has taken it for a few years now without reprecussion. Speak to your Doctor and ask his recommendation.

The best way to treat anxiety is to figure out what the cause is, and deal with that. Talking to a licensed mental health provider can help you understand why you are anxious and learn ways to constructively address the source of your anxiety. Medications can be helpful, but all medications have side effects, and if you don't deal with the source of anxiety in your life, you might need to be on the medication for a very long time.

The medication I have for anxiety is Clonazepam which is used for the short-term relief of the symptoms of anxiety. I only take it when I am having a very difficult day controlling my anxiety. There different medications you can get a prescription for anxiety.
The problem is sometimes anxiety is not the only issue that needs fixing. Anxiety may be due to work or family related stress, debts, and many other factors, even mental disorders. Anxiety is a reaction to thoughts which we permit to go out of control in our heads. It is often a combination of thoughts. The the phone rings, you get nervous, start worrying, wondering why, what is going to happen, what did I do, your heart start betting fast, you get a pressure in your chest, head ache, etc., etc.
So medication will not help fix you anxiety, it will just make your symptoms easier to manage. Medication and some sort of personal action, like self help, psychology, and even just talking about it, will bring you to find an easier place where you can deal with these very bothersome yet in no way dangerous attacks.
I suffer from panic attacks quite regularly but I try not to take the drugs. They just one of the tools you have to face anxiety. But they are very useful and an effective to help you take over.

Lorazapam 1 mg it takes the edge off without making you to sleepy I run a group home and everyone of my people that suffer with anxiety take that ..
I feel you should also talk to a counselor due to your anxieties may be something that you can change without medacation. day to day life can cause normal anxiety or more stress but if it is something that you seem to be able to deal with then sometimes we just need alittle help. lorazapam can also be taken as needed so you again may just need something extra to take the edge off... good luck

While the types of medications mentioned here can provide immediate relief, i think its important to mention that taking anti anxiety meds for extended periods of time, can be habit forming. These medications are not long term solutions but can definately help for short periods of time while undergoing therapy and definately under supervision of a healthcare professional. I have also found that SSRI medications like zoloft and nuzacare can also be helpful and are a better long term solution with fewer side effects. Long term use of Benzo's like Xanax, Valium and Ativan can make the anxiety/panic worse when the patient tries to come off them. The best thing to do is to discuss the issue with a doctor and voice your concerns. The doctor will be able to offer some suggestions. Other forms of therapy are available and can be very helpful. Excercise, Yoga and Healthy living go a long way to helping make one feel better. Cutting out alcohol/drugs is a must.

I have taken both benzodiazapines and SSRI (Serotonin Re-uptake Inhibitors). Benzodiazapines are for a quick relief of anxiety/panic attacks. SSRI's are a medication that works over time and takes several weeks to start working. Benzodiazapines are highly addictive and have side effects including but not limited to drwosiness, upset stomach, loss of sexual desire, loss of sexual functioning, possible blurred vision, appetite loss, and issues with memory. I would not reccomend a benzodiazipine for the long-term.
SSRI's on the other hand are not habit forming and while they also have similar side-effects, not all people react to medication the same. You may not experience any side-effects at all.
Talk to a mental health professional about your symptoms and concerns about taking medication. Ask questions and don't be afraid to consult with another professional before making a decision.

Instead of medicine try meditation. Meditation is the best solution for almost all psychological problems. In meditation you go to the root cause of anxiety and eliminate it. Medicine will treat only symptoms but meditation will go deeper.
Second thing it has no side effects. And this is the most important thing. It will not take longer than few weeks. You will learn to control your mind effortlessly. You can see the effects from the first day. Mind and breathing are connected and when your breathing gets deeper your mind gets relax.
Vipassana or mindfulness meditation is best to control anxiety. Personally I got best results from meditating regularly. In Vipassana you sit silently with your eyes closed and focus your attention on your breathing. You can do it from 15 to 45 minutes. Just by focusing on the breathing your mind will get calm and relax. This meditation relax the deepest layer of your mind.
You asked about medicine but I'm suggesting you meditation because it worked for me. You can use meditation as medicine and I believe it is the best medicine in the world.
